Shouldn’t vacation be relaxing? Like sipping cocktails by the pool and long walks on the beach? We admit that this kind of vacation has a time and a place but we often find ourselves to call something a little different. Choosing an aggressive bike tour that will force you to take residence in the pain cave for several hours at a time is crazy. It’s just down-right crazy. And we love it.
Sometimes it's hard to chose between road and dirt. We have an abundance of both in Western North Carolina. Whichever path we choose to take, we know it will be epic. We admit we can hardly mention France or Provence without the thought of Mont Ventoux crossing our minds. It stars in our dreams at night and it makes our legs ache with anticipation to think of riding to the summit of this Giant of Provence. The sufferfest that is summiting Mont. Ventoux is well worth the pain and sweat. It’s the stuff of legends and we want to explain why the mountain has such a firm hold on our heart.
One of our favorite corners of Provence and the Rhone Valley – and there are many – is Vaison la Romaine. This small town lies in the shadow of Mont Ventoux or the Giant of Provence and is an overnight stop on most of our Provence tours. The ancient Roman town is chock-full of history, art, delicious eateries and our favorite – miles of breathtaking road to ride our bikes on. We’ve narrowed down our top 5 sights in Vaison-la-Romaine that you should definitely make time to visit while in the area.

Watching the roof of Notre Dame burn this week left us feeling homesick.
