About Us

We are a family company. Outfitter Bicycle Tours was founded in 1996 by Dick and Marilyn Powell as an extension of their bike shop in Los Altos, California. It was an expression of their passion for cycling, travel, and exploration. We, Jamie & Joy Gilpin, have continued that passion and look to expand the legacy in the years to come.

FROM THE BLOG

Ronald C.: Self Guided Tour

“Bruno speaks English very well. He is extremely knowledgeable about food like where to eat and regional dishes and wines, accommodations and the roads. He asks feedback on the places we stayed and the quality of the food. He was very responsive our cycling needs too. When we needed sag help he was there quickly and no complaints.”

Bill & Terry Krivan: Self Guided Tour

“The countryside is every bit as lovely as we had expected, the routes offered really pleasant riding with excellent variety. We do love the self-guided style trips (this was our 3rd with your organization), with flexibility to ride at our own pace, to stop whenever and wherever we care to. The only pressure is to arrive at the evening’s destination by cocktail hour!”

Christina C.: Guided family tour in Tuscany

“Outfitters provided high-touch, personalized service when planning our guided tour to Chianti, Italy. Our guide, Bruno, was a world class rider and knew the region like his own back yard. Road support was always minutes away, whether we needed it or not. An e-bike was magically delivered to my 11-year-old daughter on day 3, when the climbs had become too difficult for her. We had wonderful service and support from Outfitters and I highly recommend them.”

Kyle & Gregg Caruso: Self Guided Tour

My dad and I had a great trip to Asheville, NC on a self guided tour where Jamie and his staff were excellent. Not only were they super flexible with where we wanted to ride but also very helpful in recommending best spots to eat/drink around town. They took care of all the logistics and planning and we just had to show up and ride.  Already thinking about another trip and would definitely recommend to friends.

Veronique M.: Self Guided

It was amazing! It was well organized and Bruno did a very good job. He is a nice guy, we really enjoy our trip. The hotels were great, cities and routes were very very nice. Thank you, we have really enjoyed our vacation by bike!

Dwayne H.: Custom Self Guided Tour

“Fantastic tour. The routes were all exceptionally well planned…. If you want to have a great, well planned, supported bike adventure, look no further. We changed to this company at the last minute. Great decision.”

Andrew Murray: Guided Mountain Tour – Tour de France

“I was able to watch Tour de France action when I wanted and ride the beautiful roads and passes of France when I wanted, and the flexibility to do either was what I most appreciated. Conquering Mont Ventoux, Col d Galibier, Col d Semnoz, Col d Serene, Alpe de Huez, riding alongside Andy Schleck and Jens Voigt on their rest day, and 40+ mph descents that went on for miles are just some of the highlights made possible by Gilpin’s careful planning.”
