About Us

We are a family company. Outfitter Bicycle Tours was founded in 1996 by Dick and Marilyn Powell as an extension of their bike shop in Los Altos, California. It was an expression of their passion for cycling, travel, and exploration. We, Jamie & Joy Gilpin, have continued that passion and look to expand the legacy in the years to come.

FROM THE BLOG

Kyle & Gregg Caruso: Self Guided Tour

My dad and I had a great trip to Asheville, NC on a self guided tour where Jamie and his staff were excellent. Not only were they super flexible with where we wanted to ride but also very helpful in recommending best spots to eat/drink around town. They took care of all the logistics and planning and we just had to show up and ride.  Already thinking about another trip and would definitely recommend to friends.

Victor and Julie: Craft Beer Tour

“We thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of this tour – well thought out bike routes, very good hotel accommodations (nice, clean rooms and substantial breakfasts), and excellent choice of breweries and brewery restaurants (including brewery tours when available). It was obvious that a great deal of attention to detail had been given to this tour and customer service and client satisfaction was of utmost importance to OBT. We will definitely take another tour with OBT in the future.”

Christina C.: Guided family tour in Tuscany

“Outfitters provided high-touch, personalized service when planning our guided tour to Chianti, Italy. Our guide, Bruno, was a world class rider and knew the region like his own back yard. Road support was always minutes away, whether we needed it or not. An e-bike was magically delivered to my 11-year-old daughter on day 3, when the climbs had become too difficult for her. We had wonderful service and support from Outfitters and I highly recommend them.”

Alejandro & Carolina Holder: Custom Self Guided Tour

“We enjoyed so much that it is difficult to describe.”

Todd & Tanya Mace: Self Guided Tour

“Outfitter Bicycle Tours were wonderful- Jamie Gilpin is an excellent communicator and responds quickly to questions and needs. Bruno Baldini is an excellent tour guide, responsive, on time and a skilled cyclist. We have plans to definitely do another tour. Overall, an A+++ trip full of fantastic memories!

Geri M.: Guided Mountain Tour

“The support was incredible – so nice to have a car on the route for water, and so we did not have to lug gear for weather changes. With all the elevation, this was comforting. Exceptional mechanical support. We did not expect this kind of on-road support!”

Geoff Harris: Guided TdF Tour

I always had an idea that I wanted to go see the Tour de France once in my life. Well, I have now gone on three TdF trips with Outfitter Bicycle Tours as the experience was that good. Jamie and Joy’s low key, friendly and flexible approach made riding in the Alps an amazing experience. They did a great job of helping me determine what would maximize my experience. If I wanted an easier day, they had a suggestion to make that happen. If I wanted to try a different climb than the “recommended” route, they were able to help me make that happen. Support was great and they were there when we really needed help when we got caught in bad weather. Accommodations can be a bit tricky in the Alps during the tour, but we always stayed in lovely places that had good to great food. Overall, one of the best values you gan get for your cycling tour dollars.
