We are a family company. Outfitter Bicycle Tours was founded in 1996 by Dick and Marilyn Powell as an extension of their former bike shop The Bicycle Outfitter in Los Altos, California. It was an expression of their passion for cycling, travel, and exploration. We, Jamie & Joy Gilpin, have continued that passion and look to expand the legacy in the years to come.
When not on the bike, Joy Cadelina Gilpin is an Occupational Therapist in the public school systems. Her school schedule allows for summers in Europe guiding our tours. A former collegiate bike racer, she also spent years working in bike shops in the Bay Area and San Diego. Her time wrenching at the Powell’s former shop, The Bicycle Outfitter in Los Altos, makes her the perfect lead mechanic on our guided tours.
Jamie Gilpin is the man turning the wheels of the operation. All logistics, marketing, back office, and tour operations originate from his fingertips. Also a former racer (though nearly not as successful as Joy), cycling was a passion discovered later in life. He finally found a way to marry this passion with his business background, and created a path to the leadership of Outfitter Bicycle Tours.
In September 2011 we welcomed our daughter Celeste into our lives. Then in June 2014 we welcomed our son Cadel to the family. As parents, we are thrilled about the opportunity to expose our kids to various customs and cultures during our tours. This venture is truly a dream come true for us.
